SansFluo and More

Do you get confused with Serif and Sans Serif? Which one has the extra edges and which one doesn’t? Well, I do and this kiddie toothpaste has helped me figure it out.

SansFluo is a fluoride-free toothgel cleanser for children 0-6 years old. With that in mind, I just have to think “No fluoride” or Sans (No) Fluo (Fluoride) for short. Just the same, in serif and sans serif, the one with no extra edges is the one with the sans word. Got it? Good. Okay, I digress. Let’s get back to this amazing toothgel.

I won a pack of Health Amendments, Inc. (HAI) products from the Mommy Bloggers Philippines Halloween Party Raffle last October. Among the products inside was DA’s favourite toothpaste. We actually needed a refill already (because someone keeps eating his brother’s toothpaste!) and so when I saw their booth at the party, I asked if they were selling it. The were not however. It’s a good thing though that we were one of the lucky ones that won a pack! Yey! Anyway, this is what it looks like. Pardon the seemingly used state of the toothgel and box as DA got a little too excited with it.

Sans Fluo

Why Fluoride-Free?

It takes some practice for children to learn and get the hang of gargling and spitting out. Let’s not talk about babies. If these kids ingest too much fluoride from fluoridated toothpaste, they may get fluorosis. That’s when undesirable white or brows spots appear on the enamel.

This is why SansFluo is the ideal choice for babies and young kids. DA started out with this toothgel and DS is on it now as well. It is fluoride-free and is safe to swallow. It does not form foam, the one that we have to spit out, because it does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS (I’ve heard a lot of bad stuffs about this ingredient). It’s all natural so it does not contain harmful ingredients. Only the best for our kids, right?

But Isn’t Fluoride Essential?

But we’ve all learned from school that Fluoride is essential in strengthening teeth and in fighting tooth decay, what happens then if the kids’ toothpaste is fluoride-free? What protects their teeth?

In comes xylitol, one of the main ingredients of SansFluo.

Xylitol, a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants, has been proven to be an effective alternative to fluoride, especially for young children. This is how it works. Bacteria in the mouth cannot digest xylitol and so their growth is significantly reduced. It prevents what they call acid attack, that’s when bacteria multiply and produce acids that eat away the enamel of the teeth. (Source: Xylitol even encourages remineralisation of the enamel at the onset of tooth decay.

Knowing about xylitol makes me want to use the kids’ xylitol toothpaste myself!

Oh, but wait! There is one for me in the bag! Xywhite toothpaste! Aside from containing xylitol, this also has baking soda and silica crystals to whiten my teeth. Who doesn’t like sparkly white teeth, right? I’ve tried it already and I must admit that I have gotten so used to commercial toothpastes that I find this too bland. It does have some menthol on it, just not as much as commercial ones. After a few days though, I’ve pretty much adapted. 🙂

Crema Calmante

Another product in the bag is this massage cream. It’s an all natural cream that is suitable for babies as young as three months old. It contains Virgin Coconut Oil and Eucalyptus Oil for a soothing comfort. It gives the calming smell of balms but does not feel minty, which makes it perfect for babies and young children. I’ve used it on DS and since then whenever he sees the tube, he asks me to give him a massage.

Baby Bottom’s Cream

The last item in the bag is this Baby Bottom’s Cream. It contains Virgin Coconut oil and Zinc Oxide, which creates a moisture barrier in the baby’s skin, thus preventing diaper rash. Diaper rash is no longer an issue with the boys so I can’t test it on them. The box however says that this can also be used on cuts, bruises, and dry skin. Ahhh! Just what I need for my overly flaky hands and feet so I opened it up. Unlike other diaper creams, this smells quite good with a hint of menthol on it. My hands and feet instantly felt hydrated when I applied it. I will surely try it some more. 🙂

  1. I’ve used SansFluo ever since my kids started brushing. Recently, though, we shifted to a toothpaste with fluoride as suggested by a pedia dentist. Fluoride-free pastes kasi don’t clean teeth as well as those with fluoride. Of course, I made sure the kids already knew how to spit out the paste after brushing before we shifted (although the pedia dentist said it takes a whole tube of toothbrush to cause harm to a child).
